Satanta High School is proud to recognize Joseph Anderson as the valedictorian of the Satanta High School Class of 2024. Anderson is the son of Seth and Tiffany Anderson. Over the course of his years at SHS, Anderson maintained a 4.0 GPA across his classes, including those he took for concurrent credit with Seward County Community College: College Composition I and II, College Algebra, and College Statistics. Anderson is a member of Satanta National Honor Society and was a member of this year’s scholars’ bowl team, which captured fourth place at state. As a senior, he served as the SHS Student Body President and was president of his class.
Anderson’s academic prowess was matched by his athleticism during his time in high school. A key member of the Indian football, basketball, baseball, and track teams, Anderson was member of S-Club and won several league recognitions across multiple seasons and sports. Anderson’s extracurricular activities also included high school trapshooting and rodeo, and he was Satanta’s Medicine Man for 2023-2024.
A devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Anderson will complete a two-year mission before enrolling in a university and continuing his work in the agricultural industry.
Edwin Arana Escarsega has been named Salutatorian of the Class of 2024. He is the son of Alejandro Hernandez and Dunia Escarsega. His cumulative GPA, including coursework at Seward County Community College, is 3.96. Arana took advantage of Senate Bill 155 and began working toward a certificate in diesel mechanics at Seward during his junior year.
During his senior year, he postponed completion of that certification, opting to take concurrent classes offered at SHS including Composition I and II, College Algebra, and College Statistics. When he returns to SCCC in the fall of 2024, he’ll need just three semesters to complete his diesel mechanics certification and earn his associates degree. His current plans also include adding a CDL certification to his resume during the next two years. Ultimately, he hopes to own and operate his own trucking company.
During high school, Arana managed to balance these career plans with a number of extracurricular activities including football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was involved in a number of other student organizations as well, including National Honor Society (of which he was president during his senior year), KAYs, and Student Council. He was a four-year member of Satanta Scholars’ Bowl and helped the team capture a fourth place finish in February. He is the senior class president.
Like Anderson, Arana is a student whose leadership will be missed as he takes the next steps in his educational journey. Both of these young men exemplify the best of our small school and tight-knit community. For them and for us, it’s “Once an Indian, always an Indian.”
